Background and How to Save on Your Premiums
Read this article completely before judging it as sexist. Especially since my primary objective is to help women.
With that in mind, consider this reality:
Compared to men, women receive cheaper rates from insurance companies. Why?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) published statistics tell us precisely why. Because men have more accidents than women, receive more moving violations, outnumber women in car casualties, don't buckle up their seat belts as often and finally, are inclined to drive at higher speeds...resulting in more accidents and injuries.
Needless to say, it is obvious to insurance companies that insuring women is less risky!
This may be changing, however. The IIHS reports it that woman are beginning to drive more aggressively. Recent statistics show that 14% more women died in car accidents while, for the same time frame, male deaths decreased by 11%. If this continues, advantageous rates that women are now enjoying will become history.
Women Should Check Out These 6 Tips Before Buying Auto Insurance
- Don't settle for the basic minimum that your state mandates. Know what it is - but I strongly recommend that you don't go below $100,000 bodily injury liability, $300,000 total bodily injury and $100,000 property damage liability.
- Consider increasing your deductible to reduce your premiums.
- Inquire about available discounts...if you have a clean driving record, if you're a non-smoker, a senior citizen or even a first-rate student.
- Check out the insurance company's process for estimating damages and having repairs made. i.e. Do they have a claim center or are you responsible for getting estimates from authorized repair shops? How many estimates are required?
- Compare prices online with a free comparison shopping service.
- Read your policy before buying.
Equal treatment?
Many women drivers have expressed concern about unfair treatment when claiming insurance benefits.
If you believe your insurance company is not treating you fairly, by all means, file a complaint with the state insurance regulator.
